Before you start: what you need on Shopify

You need a ProofBeer widget or form, access to your Shopify admin, and a theme that supports sections. Online Store 2.0 themes such as Dawn and Craft let you add a Custom Liquid section or an app block from the theme editor, so you do not edit code files. Older themes may need the snippet pasted into a template file; duplicate your theme first so you can roll back. Decide where the widget goes before you paste: a product page, the home page, a collection page or a dedicated testimonials page. Each placement needs its own embed or the same embed reused in several sections.

Shopify-specific notes

• Use a Custom Liquid section for the snippet in the theme editor (Customize > Add section > Custom Liquid). Shopify's help centre describes this approach for Online Store 2.0 themes.
• If you switch themes later, re-add the embed. Shopify notes that app functionality does not automatically carry to a newly published theme.
• Checkout and thank-you page customisation on Shopify depends on your plan and Shopify's checkout settings. Check Shopify's current documentation before promising a thank-you page form to customers.
• Place review widgets below the add-to-cart button area on product pages so they support the buying decision without pushing the button below the fold on mobile.
• Keep one widget above the fold on the home page and one on product pages; more than that adds scroll without adding trust.

Troubleshooting Shopify setup

The widget does not appear on my live store

Check you saved and published the theme, not only previewed it. Open the live URL in a private window to rule out a cached page or a logged-in preview. Confirm the Custom Liquid section is enabled and sits inside a section that is visible on that template.

The widget shows in the editor but not on the page

Some themes hide empty or script-only sections. Add a short heading above the section and test again. If a page template is shared across products, check you edited the template used by the product you are testing.

There is a large blank space where the widget should be

The container height is reserved before the script loads. Make sure the snippet is not placed inside a collapsed accordion or a hidden tab, and that the section has no fixed height set in the theme settings.

My page speed score dropped

Embed the widget once per page, below the fold where possible. Lazy-load below-the-fold sections if your theme supports it, and avoid placing the same widget in the header and the footer.

A browser extension blocks the widget

Privacy and ad-blocking extensions can block third-party scripts. Test in a clean browser profile before assuming the install is broken.

Detailed Shopify setup, step by step

1. Sign in to ProofBeer and open Widgets. Create a Grid, Carousel or Avatar widget, or a feedback form.
2. Choose the sources: Google Business Profile reviews, forms, or both. Set minimum rating and layout options.
3. Preview the widget at desktop and mobile widths inside ProofBeer.
4. Copy the embed snippet from the widget screen.
5. In Shopify, open Online Store > Themes > Customize, and choose the template you want, for example Product.
6. Click Add section, choose Custom Liquid, and drag it to the position under the add-to-cart area.
7. Paste the snippet, save, and open the live product page in a private window.
8. Repeat for the home page and cart page, using the same snippet or a different widget.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Pasting the snippet into the product description editor, which can strip scripts.
• Editing the theme without a backup copy.
• Putting the widget in the header, which loads it on every page.
• Using a very tall carousel on mobile so the add-to-cart button disappears below the fold.
• Not testing after switching themes.

Keep review text visible in the page HTML where you can, because crawlers read plain text more reliably than widget-only content. Do not add review star markup for your own store reviews expecting search stars: Google does not show star rich results for LocalBusiness or Organization pages when the business controls the reviews about itself.
